Favorite Things Friday – The Premiere Edition!

Cue Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things…

So, not to get all Auntie Oprah on you, but to share a little more of myself with the world, I’m sharing my favorite things. A while ago, I had an in-depth convo with my BFF (who blogs here). We were discussing passion and what it means to really like something/someone/an idea.

“Y’know, [Sepia], I don’t really have a favorite anything.”
My usually small eyes bulged exaggeratedly a la Tracey Ellis Ross.

“Hmm… I think I have more favorite things than Oprah,” I joked.

That part of our chat made me delve deeper.

It ignited a fire in me; made me aware of things I actually loved.
A favorite is something you prefer above everything else.

My favorite song? Now that varies from time to time, but my favorite things are pretty set….

Here’s to the first, of many Favorite Things Fridays!!!

In no particular order (and not including Jesus, God, my family or friends):

1.Lavender

The color is perfect and soft. Just right for spring time. What makes Lavender one of my favorite things is the scent. It’s just heavenly. According to Lavender Farm:

Lavender is mentioned often in the Bible, not by the name lavender but rather by the name used at that time–spikenard (from the Greek name for lavender, naardus, after the Syrian city Naarda). In the gospel of Luke the writer reports: “Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment.”

I haven’t found the perfect lavender perfume just yet, but once I become a famous writer-commercial actress-producer-comedienne I’m sure it’ll be a top note in my first fragrance deal.

Funny story: at school, I walk all the way to the other side of the building to use the lavender scented handsoap in the teacher’s restroom. I smell the scent on my hands for the rest of the day and it’s calming; so worth the walk.

I also use a night time Baby Wash that’s scented with lavender.

It’s supposed to have calming properties. I just love the scent. It’s truly a favorite of mine. Not sure when I fell in love with lavender but it’s a love affair that won’t end anytime soon.

2. Sepia Photography

Hence the name, Sepia, it’s an absolute favorite of mine. It’s not black and white and the hint of color is my favorite shade: brown. I’m pretty sure I subconsciously chose the penname Sepia Brown because it reminded me of my favorite kind of photography.
There’s something really classic and vintage about photos in sepia. I imagine my engagement photos would be taken in sepia… the first photos of my 2.5 children. *dreamy eyes* Takes me back to a time when… Ah, never mind. On to the next thing.

3. Thursdays

Okay, so this isn’t actually a thing. It’s a day. Sue me.
Thursday is my favorite day of the week. It’s a reminder that the week is almost over but not quite. I love Thursdays more than Fridays because my students are less riled up and it’s my PAYDAY! On top of that, I get a two and a half hour lunch break on Thursdays!!!

Yes, God loves me a little more than the rest of the teachers here (well, me and a couple of my co-workers who happen to have a mid-day planning just before our lunchtime) .
I tend to do most of my shopping on Thursdays as well because the mall isn’t as crowded and I can sneak in a movie afterschool. Thursdays are super relaxed for me. They’re almost better than, dare I say, Fridays!

4. Sushi

Sushi is happiness rolled in rice and seaweed.

I. can. eat. sushi. every. single. day!

No California rolls here, I live for tuna, salmon, scallops, whitefish – all the raw stuff. My favorite roll of all time would have to be the White Dragon at a Spot called The Sushi House in North Miami Beach, Florida. I loooove it!
if any readers would like to treat me to a late lunch or early dinner email me at brown.sepia@gmail.com they open at 5:30pm daily.

I was first introduced to sushi at about 11. My mom would order it from some Secret Sushi Restaurant and bring it home for us to sample. Once my tastebuds moved beyond California rolls (which I barely – if ever – eat any more) I jumped into the world of spicy tuna, temaki, hosomaki, sashimi, nigiri and edamame. If I was on death row and they asked what my last meal would be; easily sushi and mac and cheese.

5. Nutella

God did something really right when he put the idea of Nutella into its creator’s mind. All hail Petro Ferrerro, who, in the 1940s created the hazelnut and cocoa spread as an inexpensive way for people to enjoy a decadent treat. Today, a small jar of nutella retails around 4 bucks. Initially very shy to try something “different”, I passed on it. But, recently, during the Facebook questions game, it came as a reply in my inbox. A friend recommended I pair it with fruit. One day, at an outdoor fair, I ordered a crepe and the rest is nutella history.
On any given Saturday (or Thursday), I can be found with a jar of Nutella, a spoon, and a good book.
Nutella is simple perfection and it’s an absolute favorite of mine.
Mark your calendars because Feb 5th is National Nutella day! Thanks to a new blog I just found out about The Onyx Plate , I’ll be whipping up something special on that day.

So, folks, there you have it: my first Favorite Things Friday!
In reading the lyrics to the song “My Favorite Things”, the last verse rang true:

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad
.

After a bad day or when something goes wrong, any of my favorite things (and a good hug) could make me feel so much better!

I hope you were inspired to think about what you really love in your life. I’ll continue to share until I run out of faves… Share some of your favorite things with me.

Until the next click of the keyboard…

I like your favorite things list! I had Nutella for the first time in French class on a warm baguette. I remember it being really tasty, and crepes were wonderful with a little Nutella filling. Alas, I’ve been allergic to all variations of chocolate since eighth grade, so I can’t eat it. Eighth grade was so long ago, I don’t remember what it tastes like, just that I loved it.

Don’t like sushi. Nope. With you on some macaroni & cheese, though. Your Thursdays sound awesome. I get paid on Fridays, though. We have discounted movies on Tuesdays, and that’s when new releases come out on DVD. I almost always have a good show to watch or DVR on Tuesdays, and new music and books come out, so I’d say I heart Tuesdays for a weekday to love.

Johnson & Johnson in general makes me feel clean, soft, and hopelessly sleepy

Allergic to chocolate?!? Dear God, how could this happen?
You know that would completely limit me to non-Idris Elba-type men? LOL

      You don’t like sushi? I can’t trust your judgment… J/K :)

Thanks for sharing and coming by to enjoy my favorite things. See you on your side of town or mine.

      Have a Blessed Weekend.

  2. As a seafood lover… i just cant seem to get into the whole sushi movement. I’ve tried countless times to swallow the cold rice, seaweed-wrapped nugget but I just cant get past the way it tastes. Uuugghhh! Now, Nutella… I can get down with this. I bought a $3 jar from BigLots a few weeks ago and accompanied it with a box of Wheat Thins… yeah, the crackers! What a great combo and its healthy too! When I’m at work and I feel the need to snack… I mess with the Nutella. I put my co-worker on it too. Her comment was, “Dooooope!” #teamNutella

Sushi is an acquired taste. I acquired it at an early age. I could truly live off sushi alone… It’s similar to my penchant for conch salad… I can’t get enough of it.

Nutella is like a drug! It’s not the healthiest thing but I have it in moderation. Try it on a slice of 12-grain bread w/ banana on top… Heated in a toaster oven… Just heavenly!

Thanks for sharing in my faves! Can’t wait until your blog blows up :)

Cool! We can’t wait to see what you come up!

Sara, co-host World Nutella Day :)

  4. I can’t wait for World Nutella Day! I just got my menu together for the party! :) Thanks for the mention!
